I am organising a Natural Lore Gathering from 12th – 18th September here in Lapland, which will cost 100 Swedish Krona (the price of a membership card to the nature center) and you must spend at least 4 of the 7 days helping with work on the project.  You must get to Gällivare at your own costs, but we will transport you from Gällivare to Dokkas.

We now own the old school in Dokkas

and Arthur Leidgrens house

Both require repair works, cleaning and decorating.

Accommodation will be basic; space to pitch a tent or and area of floor to sleep on.  We will supply SOME meals but there is also a shop in the village where you can buy food, drinks and other supplies.

There will also be some activities and workshops available (if you feel you would like to run a workshop, please let us know).

There are 30 places available and if you would like to participate, please donate 100SEK (about £10) via the “Donate” button on the site and email you details to me via arthurleidgren.naturecenter@gmail.com.

Common Swift Study

Yesterday we had Professor Susanne Åkesson at the nature center to talk about here research into bird migration and navigation and about here research work with Common Swifts (Apus apus) here in Lapland.

Today I was invited along to watch the research work being done.

Here we are setting up nets at the nest sites to catch Swifts

Here is Susanne removing a Swift from the net

This individual had been fitted with a data recorder the previous year, which was removed and the data downloaded to a computer and a new recorder fitted

The birds captured were weighed

measured,

ringed

and some birds fitted or re-fitted with data recorders

and then released

They were very soon back in their nest boxes again

Susanne will be writing more about here research on this blog soon.

Bird navigation

Until we find sufficient funds to convert the old school in Dokkas into a nature center, we are using Arthur Leidgren’s house as the nature center.

During the last few days I have been busy sorting through items and information given to us by Arthur’s family, and using these to create displays.

This room is about Arthur and his work

and this room is about the nature and culture of the area

From this room you can sit and watch the world famous Lapland (tree nesting) Swift colony, just outside the window

These are some of the many nest boxesAthur made and set up in his garden

I have much work to do in the center before it is ready for our minibus nature  safari’s, which start at the beginning of August.

Wildflower Walk

Last week we had a plant walk at the nature center.

Wood Crane’s-bill (Geranium sylvaticum) Thank you for correcting me Elma.

Sidebells Wintergreen (Pyrola secunda)

Round-leaved Wintergreen (pyrola rotundifolia) – a decoction of the leaves can be used as an antiseptic wash or to treat skin complaints.

False Lilly of the Valley (Maianthemum bifolium)

Mountain Everlasting or Cat’s-foot (Antennaria dioica)

There were also many Mayflies emerging from the lake

and we found a Fen Raft Spider (Dolomedes plantarius) a rarity in the UK.

Dokkas Majbrasa 30/4/2011

Yesterday we held the first event to help raise money for the nature center we are creating in Dokkas called Majbrasa. Majbrasa has much history but now it is a celebration of longer days and the arrival of spring, and the burning of old to make way for the new

We opened the old school in Dokkas and put information up on the walls so that people could see and read about what we are planning to do

We also had a room in the school where we served coffee, cake and hotdogs

and another room where a local family performed live music

We also had an activity for children to go out in the forest and search for items on the paper provided to them

People began arriving at 7pm

Some people purchased sausage and cooked over a small fire

others enjoyed the warmth of the brasa are went inside the school for coffee, cake and hotdogs

We left at 9:30pm and people were still there enjoying the live music

As we drove home there was a female Capercaillie standing on the road refusing to move

ALNC 23-4-2011

Yesterday I was in Dokkas (the village where we are creating the nature center) for the day.

My first visit was to the Jerttlompolo Nature Reserve, created by Arthur Leidgren due to the are being incredibly important to both migrating and breeding birds. Unfortunately the lake there was still frozen but there were two Bean Geese, I Robin singing (not a common bird up here) and one Tengmalm’s owl singing during the day.

I then visited the much larger lake in Dokkas, where we have two birdwatching towers

We will be repairing the towers during the summer and we are currently seeking financial support to build another tower with access for disabled people.

As I sat in one of the towers I heard another Tengmalm’s Owl singing. There was also a Woodpigeon singing on the far side of the lake (which is another rare bird up here). A pair of Kestrels have set up residence in one of the Goldeneye nest boxes we have put up and although the lake is frozen, there were four Whooper Swan present. There was also a White-tailed Sea Eagle circling over the lake, 2 Common Cranes flew west calling and I saw the first Meadow Pipit of the year.

I made a small fire on the edge of the lake to cook coffee and grill some sausage

It was a beautiful warm sunny day and really nice to just sit there and look and listen. There was even a Fox that ran within two metres of me carrying a vole in its mouth, so I guess it has young nearby.

Where the snow had melted I found many Cranberries left from last summer

Arthur Leidgren 1910 – 2010

An extract translated from a newspaper in Swedish Lapland….

“Former school teacher and naturalist Arthur Leidgren, Dokken, has died at the age of one hundred years. As recently as three months ago he celebrated his 100th birthday.

He was born in Lombolo Vaara, Nattavaaraby as the youngest in a large sibling group. The parents had a homestead. He trained as an elementary school teacher, first at the seminar in Murjek and then people track honors seminar in Lulea. He served at various locations in Gällivare Municipality prior to joining Dokken school in 1947, where he worked until his retirement. He has since stayed in Dokka, except in recent years when he stayed at Ms home in Ore Hill.

In addition to her teaching act, it was Arthur’s great interest and commitment to nature, hunting, fishing and crafts.

He had a rich and healthy life up to old age.

Arthur did, for example, ski trips a day up to age 95. During their forest excursions, he followed what happened in nature.

Arthur’s work is behind the creation of nature reserve where Jerttalompolo including Smew breeds. He managed to protect nornans habitat from logging. He is also the creator Dokkassjön known among ornithologists. His bird observations are published in both Swedish and European articles. For many years he belonged to them as the radio talked about the nature of northern Lapland on Christmas morning and during midsummer. For his efforts in conservation, he received many awards. It may be mentioned that he was an honorary member of Dokken hunting and fishing for prolonged work for wildlife and nature in the district .. Arthur was awarded the 1988 prize of the Nature Conservation Nature Conservation and the 2005 Gällivare Municipality’s environmental scholarship. His efforts have helped plenty of Swift and smew in the areas around Dokken.

In the spring of 1947 Arthur’s wife died. He has spent his entire life been cull and nephews we remember with warmth all nice visit we had and with him. We listened with interest to his many tales from the forest and lake. His thorough knowledge of nature helped enough that his stories were so interesting.

In his handicraft work, he has made knives, wooden bowls, tables, owls, bird feeders and bird tables. Material for these he drew from nature. Many of these crafts are among his nephews and other relatives are fond memories.

Arthur was the last of our parents’ generation. He stood for a lot of our roots in the homeland. We are proud and happy that we had him as uncle.

Arthur Leidgren Nature Center Project Summary

We are creating a nature study center in memory of Arthur Leidgren, teacher and naturalist, in the Swedish Lapland village of Dokkas, where he lived and worked for most of his life.  The center will include; information about Arthur, the nature, people and culture of the area, an education room, activities and accommodation for tourists and guests.  There will also be a walkway to a nearby lake where visitors can observe the nature from two observation towers.

We are developing a programme of events and activities that will allow the center to be open twelve months of the year.

We are currently seeking funding to repair an old school in Dokkas, which will become the nature center.

If you feel you have benefited from the information on my blog or you would like to help support this project, please donate whatever you can afford via the “Donate” button in the sidebar.
